Patel Residence

Patel Residence

The Shingle Style is most commonly associated with palatial summer resort estates, but it was also commonly used on more modest middle-class homes in suburban communities. This house seeks to follow in that tradition, employing a more compressed version of the style for this professional couple and their extended family.  The house employs the asymmetry, rich materiality and charming details of the style to give this house on a suburban lot an uncommon dignity and grace.  Cedar shingles and clapboard alternate to give the design an appealingly casual balance, with natural stone as a base.  The interior carries these themes forward, with the foyer, living room, dining room and stair hall flowing together in an open, light-filled continuum.  The 4,100 square foot home includes four bedrooms on the second floor, with a family room/guest suite on the first floor.
